The Filmmakers
JUSTIN MITCHELL (Director/Producer)
is an LA-based filmmaker, surfer, cinematographer and member
of the Motion Picture Editors Guild. He has just recently
finished pre-visualization work on the upcoming Dreamworks
production of DREAMGIRLS. SONGS FOR CASSAVETES, his debut
feature documentary, was shown at the London Film Festival
where the festival notes proclaimed, "[It] is that all too
rare thing: a documentary feature in which form and content
are perfectly attuned... A little gem, small but perfectly
formed." Born in Hollywood, CA, Mitchell grew up in the Valley
and moved to New York City in September of 2001, where he
made his second film, DIRTY OLD TOWN. He then relocated back
to the west coast and his move coincided with Death Cab for
Cutie's tour, so naturally he jumped on their tour bus, his
trusty Bolex in tow. DRIVE WELL, SLEEP CAREFULLY: ON THE ROAD
WITH DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE was released to widespread acclaim
in July 2005.
VINCE MEDEIROS (Writer/Producer)
has been in the magazine business for almost a decade. After
a short stint as sports reporter for metro daily THE ORANGE
COUNTY REGISTER, Vince left the dull newspaper world to make
magazines about what he loved the most: surfing. At America’s
SURFING magazine, he worked in various editorial roles, doing
anything from editing the mag to covering the world championship
tour in Hawaii, Brazil and the United States. A feature writer
and longtime editor, Vince’s work has been published
in dozens of titles around the world, including THE OC WEEKLY,
OPENDEMOCRACY.ORG, AUSTRALIA’S SURFING LIFE, SURFER’S
PATH, TRIP, LOADED, among others. He holds an MA in Media
from Goldsmiths College, London, and is currently editor of
ADRENALIN magazine, Europe’s largest boardsports and
lifestyle consumer title.
JOHN MAIER (Writer) is a
journalist, photographer and videographer (and surfer!) who
has been living in Rio de Janeiro since 1985. His work has
been featured in the world's most important publications and
shown on the leading networks. He won an Emmy in 2003 for
his work on KIDS BEHIND BARS (BBC/Discovery), a documentary
on child prisons produced by True Vision TV in England. John
also won a Peabody Award for human rights in 2000 for his
work on SLAVERY (HBO/Channel 4). He was the local producer
and helped shoot the Brazil portion of "PANDEMIC: FACING AIDS",
a five-part HBO film produced and directed by Rory Kennedy.
RICARDO GOMES (Cinematographer)
is a complete one-man media whiz. He is an accomplished videographer,
photo and video editor, filmmaker, and photojournalist/studio
photographer (and a better surfer than John!). He has worked
for top Brazilian and international publications such as O
GLOBO, THE NEW YORK TIMES, SPIEGEL, and ADRENALIN MAGAZINE.
He specializes in covering nature and extreme sports, but
he also films, edits and produces institutional videos for
companies and non-government organizations. He is a master
with lighting and is often called to do fashion shoots, as
well as company reports and advertisements. Ricardo is a true
ocean man and loves to scuba dive and shoot underwater video.
